Kia ora! Welcome to Public Libraries of New Zealand

"Literacy is a system of codes just waiting to be cracked! once you have, the world becomes an easier place to navigate .”

Literacy: the ability to read and write, to acquire computer literacy, to improve your financial literacy, to recognise emotional literacy, to learn about cultural literacy.

Literacy: a person's knowledge of a particular subject or field.

It's a big word that means "smarts".

To understand, to know, to feel confident.

Today’s libraries are where people feed their imaginations, rebuild their lives, find direction, upskill themselves, and put growth, understanding and tolerance into practice.

In a world overloaded with information, spotting fake from fact is vitally important for decision making.  Having access to trusted and reliable information is mission-critical. Literate communities are more cohesive, stable and high-functioning, more resilient, tolerant, and better able to develop and participate in enterprise and growth opportunities in all things life. Check us out.

Scam phone calls to public library users

Masterton Public Library reports scam.

While it is believed this is located in the Wairarapa, Masteton Library Manager, Tiffany Daubitz, contacted Netsafe to report the scam.

"Some of our customers have been receiving calls from the International Library Service about owing hundreds of dollars to the library and asking them to pay over the phone," said Tiffany. "100% this is a scam and we've told patrons to ignore calls of this nature"

The Library is posting to their social media accounts to make their customers aware that this is a scam. And all public Library Managers have been alerted and are on the lookout for scammers.

So don't be fooled by anyone claiming they are from your local library and are trying to get money or personal information from you. Call your local library and report any suspicious incidents to Netsafe.

Increase in online harm incidents, says NETSAFE.

Netsafe is seeing an influx of online harm incidents during Lockdown. As the community stays connected with the internet, more people are exposed to risks and challenges.

Last year during New Zealand’s March – April 2020 Alert Level 4 Lockdown, we saw scam reports increase by 74 per cent. You can find tips on how to protect yourselves and your loved ones at netsafe.org.nz.
