Books Alive

New Zealand Book Awards for Children & Young Adults

This year, in association with the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults, an innovative approach to the Books Alive events has been created in response to challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Books Alive finalist events and virtual storytimes are being offered online for the first time. Is your local library hosting an event?

The full programme is here.

Waipa District Libraries is hosting two events.

Mini Whinny Goody Four Shoes written by Stacy Gregg & illustrated by Ruth Paul, Scholastic New Zealand is a finalist in the Picture Book Award. Librarian Dee Atkinson is joined by special VIP Guest World Champion Cyclist and Olympian Sarah Ulmer in a virtual storytime here.

#Tumeke is a finalist in the Wright Family Foundation Esther Glen Award for Junior Fiction. Michael Petherick's multimedia mash-up comes to life in this Books Alive special event.

Waipa Librarians are showcasing their acting talents combined with local Cambridge celebrities in a handful of sketches from the book. Starring world champion cyclist Sarah Ulmer as the Newtoun School Senior Syndicate Leader; former All Black and Chiefs assistant coach Tabai Matson as Constable Rutene; Rishi's rap performed by The Breeze Radio Host Camille Guzzwell; and author Michael Petherick in a cameo role as Steve Vibrant, Art Teacher. All followed by a brief interview with Michael.
